About ATPLCards

ATPLCards is a mobile flashcard application for EASA Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) exam preparation. It contains over 2,200 pre-loaded flashcards across all 13 ATPL theory subjects, using the FSRS-6 spaced repetition algorithm to schedule reviews based on individual memory patterns.

The application was created by Oleksii Masnyi, a pilot who passed all 13 ATPL exams, 9 of them above 90%, completing the entire theory syllabus in 14 months. Every flashcard was written by hand during real ATPL study and refined across multiple exam sittings.

Background

The EASA ATPL theoretical knowledge examinations consist of 13 subjects covering aviation law, aircraft systems, navigation, meteorology, human performance, and other topics. Candidates must pass all 13 exams within an 18-month sitting period. The exams require memorization of specific facts, figures, limits, and procedures in addition to conceptual understanding.

While question banks (such as Aviationexam) are widely used for exam practice, they primarily test understanding through multiple-choice questions. ATPLCards addresses a different need: the pure memorization of specific facts, numbers, and definitions that candidates must recall. The two tools are complementary rather than competing.

Spaced Repetition and FSRS-6

ATPLCards uses the FSRS-6 algorithm (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler, version 6), a peer-reviewed, open-source spaced repetition algorithm developed by Jarrett Ye. FSRS models memory for each individual flashcard based on the learner's review history and schedules the next review at the optimal time — just before the information would be forgotten.

Spaced repetition has been shown in cognitive science research to be significantly more effective than massed practice (cramming) for long-term retention. FSRS-6 has been demonstrated to outperform the SM-2 algorithm used by Anki in terms of memory efficiency.
